Woman Dies After ATV Falls Through Ice
A Gladwin County woman died after an ATV fell through the ice over the weekend.
On Saturday deputies were called to the report of a vehicle through the ice on Gladwin County’s Lake Lancer.
The incident was near the intersection of Butman Road and Grass Lake Road around 6:30 in the evening.
Deputies say a side-by-side ATV was being driven across the ice by 63-year-old David McCloe when it broke through the ice.
McCloe was able to free himself, but a passenger, 58-year-old Monica Johnson, was not able to reach the surface.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
McCloe said that he was in the water for approximately twenty minutes yelling for help before an unknown man pulled him out.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The sheriff’s office wants to remind everyone that there is no such thing as safe ice.
If you plan to take a vehicle out on the frozen lakes, you need to take extra safety precautions and have a plan in the event that the vehicle goes through the ice.
