Suttons Bay Woman Dies in Leelanau County Car Crash
A woman is dead following a crash in Leelanau County.
The accident happened Tuesday at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon.
That’s when authorities were called to the single vehicle crash on M-22 at the intersection of East Murray Court.
When they got there deputies found a silver Dodge Durango that had gone off the road and hit a tree.
Bystanders were already attempting to help the victims.
They had a passenger out of the vehicle and they were performing CPR on her.
The driver was still inside the vehicle with serious injuries.
Deputies and EMS took over medical care for the two and they were taken to Munson.
At the hospital, the passenger, 81-year-old Karol Ann Butler of Suttons Bay, was pronounced dead.
The driver, an 82-year-old man from Suttons Bay remains in the ICU unit.
Deputies say the Durango had been northbound when it swerved to the left, crossed over the other lane, and went off the road.
It went airborne, then hit the embankment and a tree.
Both the man and woman were wearing seatbelts at the time.
Deputies say there is no indication of drugs or alcohol being factors in the crash, however they are not sure why the car swerved to the left.
They say the driver could have suffered a medical issue leading to the accident.
The accident remains under investigation.
