State Fire Marshal Urges Caution When Cooking This Thanksgiving
The State Fire Marshal is urging those who are cooking on Thanksgiving day to be safe and know the risks.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the leading day for for home cooking fires.
In 2016 alone, firefighters responded to nearly 1,600 home cooking fires across the country.
In those fires, researchers say unattended cooking was by far the leading factor.
Cooking equipment was also involved in more than half of all reported house fires.
A popular item used in cooking turkeys is a deep fryer, which can be very dangerous, as seen in the video above.
Portable deep fryers can use a lot of oil and vapors coming off the heated oil is highly combustible.
The state fire marshal recommends considering an oil-less fryer, which can be a safer alternative to cook a turkey.
