Person Diagnosed With Eastern Equine Encephalitis Dies in Kalamazoo County
A person who contracted a rare mosquito-borne disease has passed away in Kalamazoo County.
The county department of health and community services says the person that died was one of two to contract eastern equine encephalitis.
Those with the uncommon disease may develop a severe infection that causes brain tissue to become inflamed.
And while it is mosquito-borne, few contract it.
However, another case was reported in nearby Berrien County and officials are trying to determine if two others have it in Kalamazoo County.
Health officials recommend protecting against mosquitos by wearing long sleeves and pants as well as repellant with DEET.
