Photos Released of Plane Found That Crashed in 1997
The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office has released photos of a plane that went down more than 20 years ago.
These photos show the Piper PA-28-235 that went off radar after leaving Drummond Island on its way to Howell in 1997.
The Coast Guard and the Civil Air Patrol began to search the area for four days, before abandoning the search due to lack of evidence.
There were sightings of low flying aircraft over I-75, but the Civil Air Patrol was not able to locate the plane.
A husband and wife aboard the plane are believed to have died in the crash.
The plane was found in a remote area north of St. Ignace early last month by National Forest Service personnel.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash and will be back with a forensic anthropologist next week.
