Empire man arrested for 7 OWIs since ’79 arrested again
A man already on Circuit Court probation for 5 years for Operating While Intoxicated was picked up Tuesday night in Empire for drunk driving.
Police received a call stating a man was staggering around his truck and had just urinated next to it.
Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies located the man, shortly after, headed east on M-72.
Upon making a traffic stop, police say the man gave a relative’s name in order to conceal the fact that his license had been revoked and that he was on probation.
The deputy was able to identify the man as a 58-year-old Empire man by a picture on the Department of Corrections OTIS website.
Police say the man was given several field sobriety tasks and was then arrested for Operating while Impaired as well as open intoxicants.
According to reports, he has been convicted of 7 Operating while Impaired charges since 1979.
He is being held in the Leelanau County jail until bond it’s set although, police say is likely that the Michigan Department of Corrections may want to hold him for a probation violation.
Charges of Operating while Impaired 3rd Offense, Driving While License Suspended 2nd Offense, Transporting Open Intoxicants and Giving False Information to a Police Officer will be requested.
