DEQ Awards Chippewa County EDC Brownfield Grant for Former Kincheloe Air Force Base
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality awarded Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation a hefty grant of $45,000.
The brownfield grant will help the county find new uses for vacant buildings at the Chippewa County International Airport in Kincheloe.
The facility was formerly the Kincheloe Air Force Base. The base closed in the late 1970s and has been owned by the Chippewa County EDC ever since.
The grant will help the the county evaluate unused buildings on the property and determine environmental cleanup such as asbestos removal.
When the brownfields are redeveloped, the property values increase for both the new site and nearby properties.
