Blessing of the Water to be held Saturday

A Blessing of the Water Ceremony will be held at 9 am on Saturday, January 8th, 2011 on the Great Lakes Maritime Academy Pier located by the Hagerty Center on West Grand Traverse Bay. The ceremony will be performed by Father Iakovos Olchnowicz of Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church and other members of the Church faithful.  Father Iakovos will be blessing the waters of the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie on the following Saturday, January 15th following the Holy Liturgy celebrated at St. George’s Church. The water blessing of the St. Marys is scheduled to take place at the power plant pier at 1 PM on the afternoon of the 15th.

The Order of Great Blessing of Water is an ancient rite begun in the Church of Jerusalem and held on the Jordan River. It is traditionally celebrated on January 6th, the Feast Day of Jesus’ Baptism (also known as Epiphany or Theophany). The ceremony begins with a procession to a local body of water and includes the singing of several liturgical poems composed in the third century followed by the immersion of the wood of the Cross into the water three times.
