Cheboygan County Tanker Rollover Update

Police have now released the names of the people involved in a semi-truck rollover that caused M-68 in Cheboygan County to be shut down for over 12 hours Wednesday.

The accident occurred on M-68 near East Tower Road in Forest Township. Police say a Chevy Impala driven by 38 year old Melissa Skidmore of Tower lost control and crossed the center line into the path of a semi-truck hauling ten thousand pounds of liquid propane. The Semi collided with the car just behind the drivers seat, which split the car in two.

The semi-truck, which was driven by 55 year old Stefan Smith of Houghton lake, rolled over onto its side and slid down M-68 for two hundred feet before coming to a stop. The jaws of life had to be used to extricate the driver.

The tanker’s propane was safely transferred to another tanker after a voluntary evacuation of residents in the area.

Both Skidmore and Smith were transported to McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey. Police stated that upon investigation of the accident there was a suspicion that Skidmore had been drinking; blood test results are still pending from the Michigan State Police Forensics Lab.

The accident remains under investigation.
