The home improvement chain regularly offers grants for veterans clubs across the county so those organizations can afford to refurbish their buildings. The Cadillac American Legion post applied for and received a grant last year, and on Thursday a group of volunteers put that grant money to good use.

“They’re doing a lot of facelifting… painting… cleaning… just totally redecorating the interior of the club. Even replacing bathrooms that are sixty, seventy years old. It’s just going be be a great thing for our post and for the veterans,” said Ritchie Harris, Commander of the Sons of the American Legion Post 94.

The American Legion post was closed on Thursday while the renovations took place, but is now reopen with a brand new appearance.

Orchestra and choir are just two of the many sounds a packed auditorium heard last night at a concert at the Cadillac High School Auditorium… and if you missed that concert, you have one more chance to see and hear the student’s work tonight.

The exhibition combines art displays with music; it begins at 6pm with a showcase of student art in the halls and library of Cadillac High School, with a concert starting at 7.

“It’s a nonstop collage show, so it’s one thing right after another… everything from a piano solo up to a work that includes all band kids, all choir kids, and all orchestra kids playing at the same time,” explained Mike Filkins, Director of Bands.

Tickets for tonight’s show are free but they’re being handed out on a first come, first serve basis.

The DNR is currently in the middle of a netting survey on Lake Cadillac and the Cadillac News says that surveyors made a very shocking discovery– carp. The 29 inch fish was found inside a net and biologists hope its the only carp they find– adding it may have been dumped inside the lake by a fisherman. Preliminary results are showing good numbers of large and small mouth bass and several other types of fish. The same testing was completed last week on Lake Mitchell.

and

There is expected to be about $300 million dollars more this year in Michigan’s budget than predicted. The Traverse City Record-Eagle says a combination of higher-than-expected tax payments and less people on state aid is helping this number. The extra money may be set aside for court cases or a rainy day fund. Officials also say the state will probably have about $100 million more to spend in the next budget year.

Wearing bras for a good cause. The 18th Annual Breast Cancer Walk and Run in Charlevoix is going on tomorrow. The event is being held in East Park. Registration starts at 8am and the event kicks off at 9, organizers said while the event has been around for a while, there’s a unique new aspect this year.

Now, the event organizers say that they have had a lot of support from the community and the local businesses who have decorated some of the bras and have put them up in their storefronts. If you would like more information you can head to WalkRunCure.org
